Energy Imbalances and Blockages in Acupuncture Meridians-Definition of Disease According to Traditional Chinese Medicine

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, energy imbalances or blockages in acupuncture meridians cause various health problems, pain and illness. Acupuncturists attempt to eliminate blockages and re-balance the energy flow in these meridians. Thus, functions are recovered, pain and disease begins to improve and optimal health is achieved.

12 meridians

Your doctor can provide information about the imbalances in your meridians by way of examining you and by taking measurements from acupuncture points with electro meridian imaging techniques. Furthermore your doctor can inform you about the negative effects of these imbalances on your health and also the emotional problems hidden under these imbalances.

Let’s give an example;

The Large Intestine Meridian is responsible for transforming digested food into waste and reabsorbing fluids. This meridian works in conjunction with the Lung Meridian to regulate the skin and breathing. If your doctor finds out that your energy is deficient in this meridian, this deficiency may be associated with one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Constipation or diarrhea, poor digestion;
  • Dry throat, toothache, tinnitus, skin conditions, frontal headache;
  • Cold teeth, fullness and congestion in the chest, coughing, asthma, and wheezing;
  • Disturbances of the face, cheeks, forehead, eyes, nose, lips, gums and teeth;
  • Weakness, pain, swelling or stiffness of the hand, arm, neck, shoulder or spine;
  • Inability to raise the shoulder;
  • Inability to rotate the neck.

İnteresting, isn’t it? With the classical Western Medical approach it is difficult to think that all these symptoms could be the result of same imbalance. Cold teeth and skin problems together with the inability to raise the shoulder!! Come on!! But infact they are related in Chinese Medicine.

A more interesting fact is that; an imbalance in the Large Intestine Meridian may be associated with difficulty letting go of the past and also financial issues.

So now you can also correlate your feelings and emotions with your symptoms. This is perhaps something you never could have imagined before. Learning all these connections will broaden your understanding of your own body-mind relationship.

Then; it is the responsibility of your doctor to practice Acupuncture in order to restore balance to your meridians. She will give you appropriate dietary advice to correct the deficiency, appropriate herbal remedies, suggest some special qigong exercises to regulate the energy flow in your body and perhaps some emotional freedom techniques to help you with the emotional roots of your problems.
